Following the political rupture with the Cooperative Movement under the 1997 and 2001 Labour Governments, Labour and Conservative policies for cooperatives and the wider third sector have emphasised a marketised direction. Third sector organisations are now expected to compete in a market against the private sector to win contracts for delivery of public services to reduce their cost.
